Hard Water: A Mineral Problem

Hard water is water with high levels of dissolved calcium and magnesium. These are naturally occurring minerals picked up as groundwater moves through rock and soil. They're not harmful to drink — they're the same minerals in your diet. The problems they cause are practical: scale, spots, soap scum, and appliance wear.

Contaminated Water: A Safety Problem

Contaminated water contains substances — chemical, biological, or radiological — at levels that may pose health concerns. This is a different category entirely. Contaminants can include things like certain disinfection byproducts, industrial chemicals, heavy metals from plumbing, or microbes. These are the things that warrant attention beyond taste and convenience.

Why the Difference Matters for Choosing a System

A water softener solves hard water. It does not solve contamination. A reverse osmosis system reduces many dissolved contaminants but doesn't soften water. A whole house filter reduces chlorine and sediment but doesn't remove hardness or the full contaminant range of RO. Matching the system to the actual problem is the whole point of testing first.

Frequently Asked Questions

No. Hard water contains dissolved calcium and magnesium — naturally occurring minerals, not contaminants in the harmful sense. Contaminated water contains substances at levels that may pose health concerns. They require different solutions.
